Did Comey Leak Classified Information?

(UnitedVoice.com) – For the second time, former FBI Director James Comey is under investigation to determine if he illegally leaked classified information to the New York Times and The Washington Post in 2017. This investigation concerns a Russian investigative document surrounding the Hillary Clinton email and server scandal while she was Secretary of State.

According to the leak provided to the New York Times and The Washington Post, the Russian intelligence document claimed “a tacit understanding between the Clinton campaign and the [Obama] Justice Department over the inquiry into whether she (Clinton) intentionally revealed classified information through her use of a private email server.”

The Russian document further stated that the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) said to a liberal supporter that “Attorney General Loretta Lynch would ensure Clinton was not prosecuted in the email probe.”

Comey used the Russian document to justify a 2016 press conference where he announced, without DOJ permission, that “no reasonable prosecutor” would charge Clinton.

It’s unknown if the document is credible or reliable.

The FBI has become suspicious that Comey may have leaked the Russian document since he was one of the few people who were familiar with its contents.

Comey’s Friend Describes the Russian Document

In an April 2017 New York Times article, Comey’s longtime friend Daniel Richman revealed the existence of the classified Russian document.

Richman, a Columbia Law School professor, also helped Comey leak his memos regarding private conversations Comey had with Trump, which triggered an investigation by DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz. Horowitz determined Comey violated FBI policy and referred him for prosecution. The DOJ declined to prosecute.

The question about the April 2017 Times article is: how did Richman know about the Russian document, who told him about it, and why did he repeat it in a news article?

In addition, in a book by James B. Stewart published last fall titled, “Deep State: Trump, the F.B.I., and the Rule of Law,” the Russian document was mentioned in the book.

It’s unknown if the Times article or book triggered the new investigation into potential leaking by Comey or if a grand jury has been impaneled.

On May 9, 2017, President Trump fired James Comey as the Director of the FBI.

Trump Has Been Calling for Investigations

Throughout the 2016 general election, Trump took aim at Comey over the Clinton email and server investigation and conclusion.

Since Comey’s firing, Trump has demanded that he be investigated for leaking information and repeatedly said Comey was corrupt and his firing was justified.

There are still plenty of questions yet to be answered regarding Comey. Hopefully, these new allegations will give us some answers.
