Impeachment Day 11 – Closing Arguments
(UnitedVoice.com) – Monday brought day 11 of President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial and with it came closing arguments. Both the House managers and Trump’s defense team were each given time to make their case once more.
House Managers’ Beg Senators
The House managers went first and it went as expected. Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) spoke to who he thought were the moderate swing voters. He told the senators that they could change history if they just voted to remove:
“Every single vote, even a single vote by a single member, can change the course of history. It is said that a single man or woman of courage makes a majority. Is there one among you, who will say, Enough?’”
Although passionate, Schiff’s remarks probably didn’t sway any GOP senators to vote with him. In fact, some Democrats may deflect.
Trump’s Attorneys State the Facts
The president’s defense team spoke to the chamber and told them that the president is innocent. Attorney Jay Sekulow asked the senators to bring the impeachment to a close and to “restore our constitutional balance.”
“Stand firm today and protect the Constitution. Stand firm today and protect the will of the American people and their vote. Stand firm today and protect our nation. And I ask that this partisan impeachment come to an end.”
After closing arguments, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who Democrats believe is a swing vote, told reporters that she was going to vote to acquit.
Lawmakers have a day to sit with what they learned over the last 11 trial days and some will get to explain why they are choosing to vote yay or nay. On Wednesday, the Senate will hold a vote to acquit.
