Trump’s Team Makes First Move
(UnitedVoice.com) – The Senate impeachment trial is just getting underway, and President Trump’s legal team is gearing up for a fight.
Trump’s legal team consists of nine members, including at least one name that comes to many people’s minds when they think of impeached presidents.
Kenneth Starr is the first member of Trump’s legal team. He led the Bill Clinton investigation as an independent counsel back in the 90s. Since then, he has held positions as a university president, law professor and more recently a Fox News contributor.
Another big name on Trump’s legal team is Alan Dershowitz.
Dershowitz is a professor emeritus at Harvard and worked on the high-profile cases of Harvey Weinstein, OJ Simpson and Jeffrey Epstein. During an interview on “The Dan Abrams Show,” he said he’ll be presenting constitutional arguments against the removal of President Trump.
Other members of Trump’s team include White House counsel Pat Cipollone, Jay Sekulow, who’s Trump’s personal attorney and chief counsel at the American Center for Law and Justice, as well as Robert Ray, Jane Raskin, Pam Bondi, Mike Purpura and Patrick Philbin.
Trump’s lawyers got a head start on the proceedings on Monday by filing a brief asking the Senate to dismiss the charges against the president.
The 110-page document accuses Democrats of using the impeachment process as “a political tool to overturn the result of the 2016 election and to interfere in the 2020 election.”
According to Trump’s attorneys, the articles of impeachment do not meet the standards listed in the Constitution because abuse of power and obstruction of Congress are not crimes.
A formal schedule for the hearings has not been set. First, Senators have to debate and vote on the rules the impeachment trial will follow.
